On November 18th, I took an hour long trip to the year 3017 where I was entertained by the opening performance of a new musical, Interstellar Cinderella at The Beckett Theatre at Theater Row in New York City.

Based on the book Interstellar Cinderella by Deborah Underwood, this story is an intergalactic, futuristic take on the traditional fairytale.

New twists on the old tale include space travel, a robotic mouse-bot, hi-tech fashion, and even a fairy god-robot. With children’s music legend Laurie Berkner supplying the music and lyrics, this show was filled with fun from beginning to end.

The title character, Interstellar Cinderella, is an intelligent space mechanic who is interested in making space travel quicker and safer with her inventions but she lives with her step-mother and step-sisters where she is their personal servant.

Interstellar Cinderella yearns to explore the stars and visit distant planets as her father did before he went missing and left her to be taken care of by her step-mother. One day, she receives a once in a lifetime opportunity to enter the Prince?s Royal Space parade that is to be judged by Prince Astro and if she wins the competition, she knows she would be able to share her innovative ideas with the prince. But, as in the original fairy tale, her wicked step-mother sees to it that she cannot attend the parade or the celebratory ball. Her longtime robotic best friend, Murgatroyd, summons her fairy god-robot to get her ready for the ball, encouraging her to follow her dreams, and believe in the magic within her.

Interstellar Cinderella is truly the tale of an independent heroine who is still light years beyond her time. Her story is presented in this fun, easy-to-follow musical that both children and parents are able to appreciate and enjoy.

The futuristic setting creates a whole fairy-tale with its own space-age complications that the characters creatively navigate to get to a stellar ending for most involved.

The Interstellar Cinderella musical is part of the New York City Children?s Theatre and is playing at The Beckett Theater at Theater Row through December 18th, 2017. Shows are every weekend, with a special holiday performance on November 24th. The show is geared toward children ages 4-8 but will entertain all attendees.
